How to earn money online by writing reviews

There are numerous ways to earn a living by working from the comfort of your laptop. Making money online by writing reviews is one among the many.

And it’s the focus of this post that I’m writing.

As a beginner, you may face many challenges of how to go about it. I intend to shed more light on this subject here.

What are reviews

First and foremost, what are these reviews?

You’ve probably shopped on Amazon. Or at the least checked out products in its store. It’s currently the largest online retail store in the world.

When customers buy and use products from its store, they give feedback about their experiences with that particular product, to the extent of rating it out of 5 stars.

When Amazon puts together all these customers’ feedback, they are known as product reviews.

A review can be either positive or negative, it depends on what value the customer sees in their purchase.

But not all review is about the product some extend to the seller’s handling of customer service.

Amazon reviews are simple examples. There are blogs wholly focused on performing comprehensive product reviews, for example, the Wirecutter.

Ways to earn money through writing reviews

Companies pay top dollar to know what you think about their products. Given the competitive nature of some industries, it always pays to be at the top.

And the only way to do that is by offering a better product or service over your competition.

And that’s where you come in.

There are two main ways of earning from reviews, namely;

  • Participating in third party review and survey websites
  • Creating a blog

The former is more popular as the returns are immediate. I’ve listed some of these websites below, in no particular order. Most offer other ways to make money beyond surveys and reviews.

  1. InboxDollars
  2. Swagbucks
  3. Survey Junkie
  4. Software Judge
  5. Capterra
  6. User Testing

This listing is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are well over fifty other sites like these.

The latter of the two methods is my preferred way.

Creating a blog ensures you have control over what is published. It might take some time and effort to get going. But once you start generating revenue, it dwarfs what you can earn from third-party review sites.

One review article in a blog can generate commissions thousand times over for effort that you did once upfront.

If you’ve heard of affiliate marketing, then this is the space that it can thrive to earn you loads of cash.

It can seem like a job only for the gurus, but you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve if you dedicate your efforts over some time.

Comparison to other make money online methods

While reviews might involve more writing, it is not very different from web design, graphic design, or coding, in the sense that they are all learnable skills by any average Joe.

If you are around YouTube much, you might have come across people who had zero skills in programming. But over a year, they learn enough to rival coders with many years of experience.

Writing reviews has an even lower threshold. If you can read and write, you can write reviews.

You can start immediately, learn new skills and refine as you go along.

But the downside to blogging is that with time it can feel monotonous. That’s why a few months down the road, many of the previously motivated beginners start to fail.

It is in sharp contrast, to say, logo designers. They work on different creative projects now and then, and they have less chance of experiencing burnout.

Skills needed for writing reviews

Besides writing English correctly, you will need a few more guidelines to write award-winning reviews in the eyes of the customer.

Research skills

Uncovering what the target audience uses as phrases to search for information on the web is important. It starts with the use of keyword tools and an analysis of the results that they generate.

Also, revealing your customers’ pain points is vital to addressing their needs through your content.

For example, if I want to know how to learn surfing, information on swimming will be of less importance to me.

Planning and organization

Having a great level of organization is one skill that cuts across the board in any human endeavor. Doing things in a random manner will hurt your chances of success.

First, you need to determine your niche. Are you interested in reviewing electric vehicles or kitchenware? Next, you need to plan on how to research keywords and content.

And lastly, coming up with a plan of regular content creation and publishing. Time management is of the utmost significance.

As your blog grows, other roles that need to be taken care of will come up. And you’ll have to plan for them, for example, use and management of social media, email marketing, outsourcing, etc.

Writing skills

The ability to read and write will not guarantee success but get you on the right path. A bit of curiosity and resourcefulness will ensure a continual improvement of your written reviews over time.

A few guidelines you can utilize are as follows;

  • Use language appropriate to your target persona. The copy has to bear relevance to the reader.
  • Avoid jargon, overused words and cliches.
  • Write in a conversational style that does not sound forced.
  • Include links to additional resources; to better inform the reader’s choice of product or service.

Writing reviews wrap up

Writing reviews through incorporating affiliate marketing is a rewarding undertaking.

Several seasoned reviewers make a full-time income by running profitable blogs.

As an individual, starting the same is easy. But sustaining it is the hard part. It is because it takes patience over several months to start seeing the rewards.

You can spend your spare time starting this venture. As it grows and starts generating revenue over time, you can choose to pursue it full time.

Expect hiccups along the way, but this is normal for all human pursuits.
