How to avoid distractions in affiliate marketing

The thought of leaving the stringent world of employment to pursue affiliate marketing can seem exhilarating.

But dangers lurk in the shadows waiting to trip you as you walk through. They are the reasons most people fail in affiliate marketing. One of them is distractions.

At the back of your mind, you’ve already lived how you will make thousands of dollars. But reality has a way of deviating from the plan.

That is unless you plan and take deliberate steps to counter them.

The good news is that many of the strategies you already know. You’ve used them in other aspects of your life and can be repackaged and used as you pursue affiliate marketing.

Have a clear goal

At the top of the priority list to achieving any objective is having a clear goal.

What do you hope to see as a result at the end of the day, week, month, or year? Is it a million dollars in your bank account? Helping people realize their dreams? Or is it providing the best for your family?

The list is endless. And the more refined, clear, and specific the goal, the higher the chances you will achieve it.

Before starting, take a pen and paper and write down what you intend to achieve with your affiliate marketing journey.

Take a moment and visualize what you want the end to look like.

Most of the time, at the surface, it’s about making money and paying bills, but that might not be enough for most people.

Money is only a means to an end, for example freeing yourself from paying rent by owning your own home.

You’ve probably always done this exercise with other undertakings, so it should not be too hard. Be honest with yourself.

Always work from a list

Once you are clear on your goal, always practice working from a list.

Break down your overall goal into actionable steps. Steps that you can complete on a monthly, weekly, and daily basis. This is vital for monitoring progress and milestones on your overall objective.

For example, if you intend to write thirty blog posts in three months, you will need to determine how much you can write every day to achieve this.

Simple math shows on average you need to publish ten posts per month. On a weekly basis, around two or three posts.

When you figure these things out your daily routine becomes clear and easier to carry out. Having a list clears your mind to focus on what’s at hand at the moment.

Without this, you are likely to drift from one inconsequential activity to another, like playing video games. At the end of the day, you are hardly one step closer to your goal.

Identify distractions

Besides the above points, one of the biggest favors you can give yourself earlier on as you map out your path is identifying potential distractions.

It ensures you will know them once you encounter them. And there are many in the digital space, from social media to online games!

I’ve been in this space longer, and below I list the major ones, not in any particular order.

  • Social media
  • Facebook, Twitter, YouTube can gobble up your most valuable time if you are not alert to your actions. It takes little effort to chat, share, and watch funny videos.
  • Leave this for when you have done your most important tasks.
  • Shiny objects
  • In the make money online niche, you’ll come across all sorts of offers promising dubious results. And convincingly. These are the click baits. If you get hooked on these, you might end jumping from one to the next in a vicious cycle.
  • And the only person not achieving any result is you, as the gurus have a field day at your expense.
  • Gaming
  • Online gaming has grown by leaps in our more interconnected world, from the simple Solitaire to Minecraft. Gaming is very addictive. It’s an obsession I admit I’m yet to shake off utterly.
  • The allure of a challenge is always very welcoming and hard to resist.

Once you identify all of them, the next step involves either eliminating, minimizing, and controlling them from your business building environment.

I recommend James Clear’s Atomic Habits strategies on how to prep your environment and stay focused.

You should read it if you have not. And it goes beyond this to show how to form invaluable success achieving habits.

Eliminate and minimize distractions

The book I’ve mentioned above has an in-depth yet plain look at how we form habits. I cannot spell it all out for brevity purposes.

And to be successful, you’ll have to stick to habits that favor the achievement of your affiliate marketing goals.

But distractions derail us, and inconsistency is the enemy of progress. And you are most vulnerable when you start to get bored.

  • Over the period you will be working, say three hours, switch off your smartphone. If not possible, mute all notifications. It should not be within arm’s reach.
  • Develop traction actions that move you closer to your goals. Instead of distracting yourself, do exercise, spend quality time with loved ones, sleep enough, etc. These increase your overall productivity.
  • Use deadlines instead of being open-ended on time needed for completion of tasks. It will demand more of your commitment.
  • Learn what triggers distractions in the first place. And using the tips from the book I’d mentioned, work to make it invisible, unattractive, difficult, and unsatisfying.
  • Set up a contract with yourself. Once I complete a task, I will reward myself. Say, a game for a limited time before I continue.
  • Unsubscribe from email lists that do not support your current objectives. It can be painful as its ordinary to become attached to some things. But to experience success, we must all make difficult decisions.

As you observe these guidelines, you will learn a lot about yourself. You will get to manage your actions, and with time develop even distraction management tactics.

Strive for continual improvement

Something else that goes without saying is that we are all different, and no one particular set of solutions will fit all of us.

While those I’ve listed above will provide a basis to start, you will have to go on a journey of discovery.

Most successful affiliate marketers have several years under their belts. They did not become overnight sensations as we picture in our minds.

That’s why time and experimentation are vital to finding your groove. The first or even second niche and strategy you adopt does not have to be your last.

Once you determine that a particular strategy is not working, either retune or scratch it and begin afresh.

Those that bear the load of change and do not quit end up achieving success in the end.

The analogy of breaking rocks hangs heavy here.

To break a boulder, hitting it with a sledgehammer once will not make an impact. But hit it severally from different angles, and it will surely shatter. And it will not be the last hit that broke it!

There are many do’s and don’ts of making money online that beginners find overwhelming.

And once you experience this, you are likely to procrastinate as you are unsure of where to begin. When I started affiliate marketing, this was a real challenge.

Every day I was doing some content research online, I’d come across shiny objects. And also, very new tools I’d never heard of that seem to guarantee unheard of results, especially keyword research tools.

I’d wonder if I was on the right track in the first place.

Over time I learned that I couldn’t juggle everything at the same time. I promised myself to stick to one thing at a time. And if results were not forthcoming for at least three months, I will consider something else.

It worked for me.

For a beginner affiliate marketer, avoiding distractions is a sure way to see progress. And work your way to success. Whatever that means to you.
